Startseite Market Segments & Applications Oil & Gas Lubricating oil treatment on a turbine balancing system – OTS oil maintenance system

Use of an oil maintenance system in power plant technology

Filtration Group Industrial’s customer, based in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, designs and manufactures complete turbine trains for conventional power plant technology. Before the large rotating machine parts are used, their functionality is tested on various test rigs. The rotating parts are balanced on an in-house system. The low vibration behavior of the turbine trains is the prerequisite for a long, maintenance-free life cycle of the machines and trouble-free operation of the power plant.

Challenge

Turbines are fluid flow machines that use a working medium to deliver mechanical energy to the machine to be driven. Many lubrication points exist in a turbine, which have hydrodynamic conditions. Turbine oils must lubricate various components and function as a lubricating oil during balancing. During the operation of the turbine, leakage may occur at some points. The result is a leak contaminated with water. Up to 2,400 liters of “waste oil” are collected in a large collection container and disposed of up to 10 times a year. For effective and sustainable cost reduction, the customer plans to treat and reuse the oil.

Solution statement

For reliable, fully automatic filtration and water separation, an OTS 16 oil maintenance system was selected for this application to ensure a residual water content below 70 ppm free water. The required cleanliness classes due to the resulting high contamination are achieved by using a Pi 150 low-pressure filter.

The high-performance Pi 150 filter for use in modern hydraulic systems is equipped with highly efficient PS filter elements, for absolute filtration at a separation rate of 10 µm. The combination of oil maintenance system and hydraulic filter provided excellent measurement results in the company’s own laboratory even during the first treatment of the used oil. As a result, the costs incurred for the disposal of used oil were significantly reduced. A positive contribution to the overall environmental balance was made by this project.

Customer value

By using the OTS 16 oil maintenance system in combination with Filtration Group’s Pi 150 low-pressure filter, the customer was able to reap positive benefits:

  • The time and financial burden could be significantly reduced by disposing of the used oil
  • Further cost savings through reuse of the lubricating oil
  • Resources and the environment are conserved and thus a sustainable contribution is made to people and the environment
