How to take an oil sample?

Taking oil samples from a hydraulic system

The quality of the result of the oil sample analysis depends 95% on the correct collection of the sample. It is important to follow best practices for sample collection to ensure accurate results.

How to take the sample correctly!

  • Make sure the unit runs for at least 30 minutes before taking a sample to ensure uniform contamination throughout the oil.
  • Open the sampling valve and flush at least 1 liter of liquid through your sampling device. The valve should not be closed after flushing. When using a sampling tube, at least 3 – 4 liters of liquid should be flushed.
  • Make sure that no contamination occurs when you open the sample bottles.
  • Fill the bottles halfway and rinse them out, then discard the liquid.
  • Rinse the sampling bottles a second time.
  • Collect sufficient liquid and fill the sample bottles.
  • Close the bottles properly.
  • Close the sampling valve while collecting the sample (do not touch the valve during collection).
  • Label samples correctly and take all necessary actions.

Sampling methods

The best method for sampling is to use online sampling devices.

  • Always take the sample from turbulent flow zones.
  • Always use a stabilizing rod when using a sampling tube or gun.
  • Always take the sample in front of a filter.

Safety instructions

  • Always wear appropriate protective equipment during sampling and observe specific safety and environmental requirements on site.
  • Check the liquid temperature before starting sampling.
  • Make sure the bottle material is compatible with the liquid.
  • Record the system pressure and ensure that the sampling device is safe to use at the specified pressure.
