A reaction injection moulding process is a moulding process to manufacture moulded plastic parts. The nozzle must be protected against blockage in this process. Polyol and isocyanate and additional additivies/fillers in liquid form are mixed in a mixer and then injected into a forming tool as a reaction mass. Any solid matter or agglomerates that enter the pump are separated to protect the nozzles against blockage. The medium to be filtered is toxic and prone to crystallisation. The ingress of humidity into the process must be avoided in order to ensure that no undesired secondary reactions occur.
Isocyanate is an ester of isocyanic acid. Esters are chemical compounds that are formed by a condensation reaction (reaction of an acid and an alcohol or also phenols by removing water). Isocyanates are highly reactive substances that can be used in combination with alcohols for the manufacture of polyurethanes. Polyurethanes can be used to produce foams that are used in cushioning material, i.e. mattresses or seat cushions for furniture or car or aire plane seats, amongst other things. One of the main applications of polyurethanes is in paints and coatings.
