From the heart of the earth

KAESER compressed air station helps to save resources

Mineral water consumption in Germany is almost 140 litres per capita per year – the most popular are waters with a medium carbon dioxide content. Mineral water is the only foodstuff in Germany that has to be officially recognised. It may onle come from originally pure sources and must be bottled directly at the source. Only a few treatment processes are permitted, such as the separation of iron and sulphur compounds

The customer of KAESER is a state-recognised medicinal spring and produces various types of mineral water, natural medicinal water and various sweet soft drinks. The mineral water company operates seven springs. The mineral water is drawn from a depth of up to 170 metres. Four springs are used for the production of organic mineral water.

Challenge

The mineral water company works according to the so-called Win Charter of the state of Baden-Württemberg and is thus committed to reducing electricity consumption and CO2 emissions. This automatically also applies to the generation of compressed air.

The previouos compressed air system generated the control air required for handling the glass bottles. The annual compressed air requirement was 4.4 million m³. This required a space consumption of about 640,000 kWh. In order to save the corresponding potential, the customer invested in a modern compressed air station from KAESER.

Solution statement

  • KAESER Kompressoren is using two KAESER CSD 105 screw compressors (volume flow 6.74 to 10.14 m³/min) and two KAESER BSD 75 screw compressors (volume flow 4.43 to 7.0 m³/min) for this project. The KAESER compressors are equipped once without and once with speed control.
  • Two energy-saving KAESER refrigeration dryers of the type SECOTEC TF 340 as well as KAESER activated carbon adsorbers and various filters ensure the required compressed air quality in the food sector.
  • The KAESER SIGMA AIR MANAGER 4.0 cross-machine control system controls the interaction of all systems.

Customer value

  • The purchase of the compressed air system was supported by a BAFA grant, as the installation enabled energy-related optimisations to be implemented.
  • Reduction of compressed air generation and operating costs through KAESER SIGMA SMART AIR service
  • Improvement of the compressed air availability
  • Early detection of maintenance needs in order to be able to initiate appropriate measures at the right time
  • Thanks to the new KAESER compressor system and the better adaption to the actually required compressed air demand, approx. 190,000 kWh could be saved per year. This corresponds to CO2 savings of about 114 tonnes.
